Some Transistor previous participants give their impressions here about the trainings...

1. What made you decide to attend Transistor in the previous years?

Transistor 2

Tuomo Joronen: “I attended a 3D course, which is something I´m not so experienced in, so I decided to pay a visit.”

Eric Rosenveig: “The selection of topics was directly related to my own work as a media artist and the persons chosen to give the courses were very good. It was a nice opportunity to learn something from an expert in a relaxed environment and in a very concise fashion.”

Guiliano Cavalli: “The idea of learning some new techniques and experimenting with experts and people who are in the same industry or pursuing similar interests really pushed me to attend and increase my experience.”

Yves Pauwels: “Renowned speakers and the quality of their work. (And Prague is beautiful!)”

Transistor 2007:

Claudiu Toader: “The curriculum of the program and the multi-cultural background of the participants was the main reason for me to participate at Transistor 2007, Karlovy Vary.”

Honza Rylich: “Because I knew about it, and it is just in the area of my interest - an interdisciplinary workshop at the edge of technology, art and science. And because I will not study forever, I wanted to start building my own network of contacts.”

2. How was your overall experience during the training session? What were some highlights of the program?

Transistor 2

Tuomo Joronen: “Overall my experience was good. I especially liked the part with machinima and Friedrich Kirschner. I really enjoyed the hands on practises like the ones we had with Friedrich. My favorite lecture was the one with the game design on half life.”

Eric Rosenveig: “My overall experience was very good. I learned a lot during the session on modifying games/game engines for artists. Very concrete facts, direct 'how-to' using particular open source software, aesthetic theory; and tips for artists which were directly career related.”

Guiliano Cavalli: “The experience was in general good, the exchange of knowledge was very good, the techniques we learned were the newest on the industry.”

Yves Pauwels: “It was very interesting and I had a pleasant time.”

Transistor 2007:

Honza Rylich: “It is not possible to choose only one or two things, because everything was at least partially interesting. I liked theoretic presentations (i.e. artificial intelligence or stereoscopy), I liked info from practice (i.e. presentations about the development of Half-Life 2 or Armed Assault 2), and I liked the workshop itself (i.e. creating our own movie with motion-capturing, or playing with Arduino). Everything was very nice, and helpful.”

Claudiu Toader: “I have participated at the 2nd Session “Motion capture and stereoscopy for games and film” and it was remarkable. The atmosphere was of sharing experience by working and trying to create a concept or piece of art together.I could say that meeting different artists with different areas of interests was the highlight of the program. A second point was the live demonstrations of some artworks (e.g. translating dance motion into sound).”

3. In what way did you benefit as an artist by attending this program? How were you able to apply the concepts and techniques that you learned at Transistor to your projects/experiments after the program? (Please provide concrete examples if possible)

Transistor 2

Tuomo Joronen: “I think the main gain was that I got an introduction into machinima.”

Eric Rosenveig: “I personally have been involved in working with my collaborator Willy Le Maitre's project's in 3D video for some time so these issues interest me. I haven't yet applied anything I learned about machinima or game engines to my own work yet although I will eventually use aspects of much of that session. In my own practice projects percolate over long periods of time before they are realized, and I am working on other things right now - issues related to the archive/database and their public availability in 'non-wired' locations. I appreciated the courses very much and am looking forward to the 2008
Transistor.”

Guiliano Cavalli: “It benefited me because I got a global picture of everything that is possible with the new techniques that I learned and I used. I can apply these towards new experimentation on ideas I would have never thought of without the workshop.”

Yves Pauwels: “Yes I have, I teach 3D at www.digitalartsandentertainment.com (you can find images there)”

Transistor 2007:

Honza Rylich: “Well, it helped me a lot. For example, I learned some important things about motion-capturing and stereoscopy, and we've created a short movie. We were experimenting with machinima as well, and we again did a short movie. And of course, the workshop itself gave me, as a journalist, plenty of info for some interesting articles. So I must say I am very glad I was there.”

Claudiu Toader: “The great benefit of this program was meeting different artists and widening one’s horizons. The second question is work in progress, I just finished my master degree and now I am seeking for a place to develop my knowledge.”
