Transistor 2011 Is Oficially Over

CIANT has just finished its 7th issue of the series of Transistor workshops. This year, the first module was focused on digital preservation whereas the second one was focused on proffessional training in S-3D movie making following the whole process from script to post-production.

Module II workshop 3: Learning About S-3D Post-production

The last week of August, CIANT hosted the last of the series of the TransISTor workshops, following the line that was drawn and the beginning of July when the Module II was commenced. This time, the workshop was focused on the post-production processes of the S-3D footage that was shot during the last workshop in Prague (July 18-21).

The participants split their time between the CIANT Lab and an upscale post-production studio MagicLab which is based is a near neighborhood of Nusle.

One of the highlights of the workshop was the presence of Todd Margolis, Technical Director of the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts at University of California, San Diego, who brought some brand new equipment which he passed on to the participants who were also given some creative tasks that taught them how to handle and work with a previously unknown device. Especially the bloggie cameras which are being released just now were one of the hits of the workshop.

This year´s edition of the series of workshops met an extraordinary interest for which CIANT is very proud of.

Therefore, we´d like to thank everyone who engaged in this project and helped us move it forward!

The third workshop of the S-3D module is being organized in the partnership with Fresh Film Fest and the post-production studio MagicLab that offered us a highly professional and reliable background.
Under the guidance of skilled and experienced tutors like documentary filmmaker Tomas Petran, Jan Burianek (AV MEDIA) and the staff of MagicLab, the participants will learn about the practical possibilities of S-3D post-production.

We are also very happy to welcome our guest tutor – Todd Margolis, Technical Director of the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts at University of California, San Diego – who has had a long- term experience in the field and who will give his presentation on virtual reality and mixed reality in S-3D system.

TransISTor S-3D Movie Making Workshop participants shooting in Prague

This week, the third of the four workshops of this year´s TransISTor edition was commenced at CIANT´s residence in the Prague neighborhood Zizkov. The workshop focuses on stereoscopic filmmaking techniques and practices.

The participants from the Czech Republic, Greece, Lithuania, Spain, Poland and Austria will be trained in S-3D filmmaking techniques under the tutorship of experienced professionals of Celine Tricart and Yves Pupulin from BINOCLE, a French company whose strong professional background is strongly valued by filmmaking professionals. Joining them are Tomas Petran, a Czech accomplished documentary filmmaker together with Asen Sopov, one of the most well-known Czech cinematographers.

A trailer promoting the TransISTor project will be one of the outcomes of the workshop. The next workshop will be focused on its postproduction and will take place in Prague during Fresh Film Fest (International Festival of Students ´Films and First Feature Films) that became one of the TransISTor´s partners this year.

TransISTor 2011 started the series of workshops focused on S-3D filmmaking in Cyprus. Two weeks after the one and only workshop focused on digital preservation, the TransISTor team moved on to another island in the Mediterranean to learn how to make a movie in 3D while not having a monumental Hollywood-like budget at disposal.

Celine Tricart from Binocle was one of the tutors who specializes in S-3D filmmaking with low budget. Cedric Alexandre Saudinos (Parallell Cinema) took advantage of his rich experiences while talking about storyboarding and its role in the course of preparation a 3D movie. The workshop had only first-class tutors to offer: Tomas Petran, a well-know Czech filmmaker, David Steiner from Parallell Cinema and Yiorgos Chrysanthou and Efstathios Stavrakis from Cyprus who talked about stereoscopy 3D in arts.

The workshop was an important introduction especially for those participants who plan on taking part in all three workhops focusing on S-3D filmmaking. The two upcoming workshops in Prague will create a practical component to the priceless information that were presented in the beautiful environment of our partner organization – Artos Foundation.

Discussing Digital Preservation in Crete

The first workshop of the project TransISTor 2011 is officially over! At the end of June, our TransISTor team came to Crete to join the first-class and highly professional tutors from the field of digital preservation. The objective of the workshop was to try to answer questions how to ensure long-term availability, accessibility and usability of digital media objects. Our partner organization – FORTH – ICS – provided us with magnificient support and their staff was a big help for us. They helped us create a friendly and comfortable but still very creative atmosphere for all the participants.

The workshop was the one and only workshop focused on this unique and very important isssue. However, the TransISTor project is still running! We have got three more workshops focused on S3D filmmaking coming up!

Parallell Cinema Tutors confirmed !

Cedric Alexandre Saudinos and David Steiner from Parallell Cinema will join us for the Workshop in Cyprus.

Cedric Alexandre Saudinos – France

Cédric-Alexandre Saudinos is a producer, director and stereographer. He’s one of the associates of Parallell Cinema, a Paris-based S3D production company.
After a Master’s Degree in Philosophy at La Sorbonne University, Cédric-Alexandre Saudinos joins Chamaerops Productions.
He directed or produced a dozen documentaries, about forty TV-ads, numerous corporate films, a weekly show for France 3 and a monthly show for Cinaps TV.

David Steiner – France

David Steiner studied theoretical physics until 24, then started working as an assistant director, then an executive producer. At Chamaerops Productions, he produced about 20 tv ads and was in charge of the international development of the company. He wrote and co-directed the award-winning “Stereo 3D Filmmaking: The Complete Interactive Course”, and is now a partner at Parallell Cinéma, which won two awards at Dimension 3 2011, one at Dimension 3 2010, and provide stereoscopic services for David Guetta’s Zénith concerts, Salle Pleyel’s concerts, Canal+ etc.

3D Movie making

A good story is not bound to the way it´s told. A good novel or graphic novel will make a great movie if it is adapted by a scriptwriter who understands the new visual support.

Option one is to consider that „If you would not make this movie in 2D, don´t shoot it in 3D“. Option two considers that „If you could shoot it in 2D, don’t shoot it in 3D. Reality is somewhere in between these two positions. We´ll see the 3D craft evolve from being a full recipe to being used as a mere spice as did color, sound and widescreen.

2011 3D cinema edition

2011 edition brings focusing into 3D cinema / (stereoscopic dimension)

This year we are going to realize short movie in S-3D format. We launch with storyboard and script development through planning of shooting schedule, location scouting, and equipment tests into live action scenes, motion capturing and CGI animation sequences into postproduction and finalizing with help of SFX effects.
